WHO WE ARE

The Compassionate Friends (TCF) is a national, self-help organization for families that have experienced the death of a child, regardless of the age of the child or the cause of death. We have no religious affiliation, and welcome parents, siblings and other family members whose children have died from any cause.

We offer support, understanding, and hope to bereaved parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and siblings, 18 or older, who are grieving.  We provide a safe, caring environment for listening and sharing.

It takes great courage to attend a first meeting, but we have a support
system that only other bereaved families can offer. As seasoned grievers
reach out to the newly bereaved, energy that has been directed inward
begins to flow outward and both are helped to heal. Our vision is that
everyone who needs us will find us and everyone who finds us will be helped.

Meetings are held every month.  You are welcome to come unannounced
and bring a friend if you wish. Every meeting is different, so we encourage
you to try 3 meetings before deciding if the program can help you.

The mission of The Compassionate Friends is to assist families toward the
positive resolution of grief following the death of a child of any age and to
provide information to help others be supportive. There are several TCF
Chapters in the Washington D.C. Metro area, and information regarding their
specific meeting dates and times can be found on the Chapter Locator on the

Through a network of over 500 chapters with locations in all 50 states, as well as Washington DC, Puerto Rico, and Guam, The Compassionate Friends has been providing support to bereaved families after the death of a child for four decades.
